Cupboard Organisation
Traditionally house cleaning was the hygienic (and honourable) act of removing bacteria and clutter. The modern derivative, however, has little connection to this meaning. Today "cleaning" refers to the removal of visible clutter and surface bacteria from the furniture and floor. This is done via the giant trash bin--also known as the cupboard. This hidden hole in the wall has the ability to conceal anyone's dirty secrets. But not from us--we saw what's inside with our very own eyes. For the past three days, the floor mass has flinched at the creaking door, and hissed at the shadows. Scratching can be heard at night time. Last night our investigation ended horridly as we crept up to the slumped pile and tore at its overcoat--it was Felix: the neighbour's cat, three days lost and presumed to have been kidnapped. Maybe it is time for a bit of organisation.
Storage Components
- Bins
: There are many different types of bins from which to choose. The best thing to do is get a set of stackable ones; these accommodate most spaces and are designed to be stacked upon one another, lessening the likelihood of a topple over situation. The furniture-like drawer bins slide open for easy access; if your ceilings are high enough, I would recommend them. If space is limited, then buy bins that can be stacked and removed or switched around.
- Rods
: Most likely you already have a rod for hanging things, but if you have an unusually high ceiling or a need for more hanging space, you may want to install a rod above or below the present one. Since many organisational products come in hanging models, this may be especially helpful.
- Hooks
or Pegs : If there is no space for an extra rod, you might want to install some hooks on the wall or on the back of the door. This creates a place to store coats, jewellery, ties, accessories; anything you can hang really.
- Shelves
: Shelving is great if you have unused wall space. Adding in some shelves can create space for storing clothing, shoes, or whatever other knick knacks you may acquire.
- Hangers
: There are such things as multiple tiered hangers that can help save a lot of space. By placing multiple items together, you are maximising your space. These hangers can be bought for trousers, ties, belts, and skirts.
- Shoe rack
: When dealing with limited space, a shoe rack can be a tricky addition. You may want to opt for one that conveniently attaches to the door of your cupboard or one that hangs on a rod. Floor models are also available. Soft materials such as fabric can be finagled into almost any space. For larger walk in cupboards, there exist large wooden racks that are more like furniture.
- Cupboard Systems
: Everything you need in one. This piece of furniture can be placed in either reach- or walk-in spaces. Depending on the make, these models can be quite expensive but they do have some cheaper versions. Convenient for someone who does not have the time to pick up multiple pieces and does not want to hire a personal organiser. Suits all organisation needs including shelf, hanging, and shoe storage.

Organizing Tips
- When it is not snowing season, fishing season, and you do not live in the wetlands, store your wellies
(i.e. change your cupboard seasonally).
- Organise by category; for example, work clothes, casual wear, dress attire. Break down each category further by pants, dresses, blouses, etc. And if you wish to get more categorical, take it from there (e.g. colour and size categorising).
- To reduce the time spent sorting 1980s memorabilia, clean the cupboard at least twice a year.
- Label your bins (That will be an especially genius move if they are not transparent).
- Get rid of clothing, shoes, and accessories that you never wear. I know it is hard, but snuggle a bit, have a good cry, and let them go.
- Donate or give away discarded items. You'll be doing a good thing for humanity. And probably your own fashion.
Money Saving Tip: If you must save money, cheaper products serve the purpose; these are those made with fabrics, plastics, or cheap metal rods. More expensive materials are finely constructed woods and metals. |
