Everyone knows that simply walking can be great exercise, but the only way you'll know if you're doing enough of it is if you use a pedometer A pedometer will help you make sure you are reaching your fitness goal daily, weekly, or on a trip. A pedometer can also be a useful tool in the long run for maintaining physical fitness.

Choosing a Pedometer

Pedometers won't break the bank. A standard one can be very inexpensive. The more expensive one is, the more features that it will have, like calorie counter radio or heart monitor. If you don't want to spend too much money, a standard pedometer is totally fine. You can then use your own MP3 Player  to listen to music in addition. The machines that come with built-in radios or GPS device  are steeply priced. radio pedometer GPS pedometer

If you're interested in more than just walking, consider purchasing a heart rate monitor  instead. These will track your heart rate level during virtually any type of physical activity. These are often better at monitoring personal fitness than a pedometer.

Important Features

  • The most important thing to look for is a comfortable fit. Most pedometer either go around the waist or around the upper thigh. There are other models that can be attached to a shoe or arm--these are usually for running. If a pedometer is uncomfortable or is falling off, then it's accuracy could be compromised.
  • A stopwatch function will allow you to time your workout.
  • A backlit display will help you to read the pedometer more easily. Look for an easy to read screen with big digital numbers.
  • A calorie counting pedometer should have an input for your age/sex/weight.
  • Make sure there's a warning beep for target heart rate range if your pedometer has a heart rate monitor.

About GPS Models

A GPS pedometer will track your movements to give you location and total distance, as well as time and pace of your workout. If you like to hike or go on long distance runs, then a GPS might be right for you. GPS models don't generally work indoors, but they can transfer data to a PC for more accurate tracking. These machines, also known as speed and distance devices are usually more costly, but will definitely pay off if you use it well.
