Now that Playstation is on their third installment, memories of the original Playstation have started to fade. Playstation 1 brought Sony into the spotlight, but it was the huge library of games to choose from that really confirmed Sony's running with the big boys. It's difficult to choose just a few awesome Playstation games. There were excellent games in just about every genre. Here are some of our top picks for the greatest Playstation 1 games of all time.

Metal Gear Solid 

The game, which followed the exploits of Solid Snake, was an action/adventure game that relied heavily on using stealth and had a presentation that was superior to anything else on the platform. The levels were huge, vast, and detailed, perfect for months--- not hours--- of fun.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night 

This is probably one of the best 2D side scrolling games of all time. The gameplay and controls are perfect, the graphics are amazing for its time, and the music is really cool. A must for side scrolling game fans.

Gran Turismo 2 

This game ruled! There are plenty of modes to play in and lots of levels and cars to unlock. It featured over 500 licensed vehicles, tons of tracks, and provided what was a phenomenal racing experience.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 

Extreme sports were never better. It combined grit and rad culture in a way that almost defined the youth culture of the time. The tricks were phenomenal, as was the pure energy of the game.

Resident Evil 2 

An awesome game that has been the inspiration for countless other, more modern games. Taking place a few months after the first game, you can choose between two characters that each have their own separate story line. It was a brilliant sequel that still stands as the best Resident Evil game on PlayStation.

Vagrant Story 

Want a completely engrossing game? This game features an extremely cinematic presentation, intriguing storyline, and an impressively deep battle system.

Final Fantasy VIII 

This is one of the best RPGs on the Playstation. The graphics were amazing for its time, the storyline is captivating, and gameplay is phenomenal.

Ape Escape 

Ape Escape is the story of a band of rogue monkeys that escape from the amusement park and mistakenly break into a genius professor's laboratory. They find the inventions called the Peak Point Helmets and instantly become intelligent and try to change history so apes rule the world!

Street Fighter Alpha 3 

Like 2D fighting games? Street Fighter Alpha 3 features a long list of characters, excellent character animation, and classic 2D fighting gameplay.

Crash Bandicoot: Warped 

Nintendo has Mario, Sega had Sonic, and Playstation had... Crash Bandicoot! This game, the third installment of the series, features amazing graphics, top notch animation, tight character control, and awesome, well-designed levels.

Silent Hill 

This survival horror game concentrated on adventure style gameplay and placed heavy emphasis on character and storyline. It was commonly thought of as one of the scariest games on the system!

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo 

This game is super fun and highly addictive. The game features cute, super-deformed characters from the Street Fighter and Dark Stalker games, Street Fighter II-like combos, and intense, strategy driven gameplay.

Crono Cross 

Crono Cross is one of the rare games to receive a score of 10 in every category on GameSpot.com. This RPG is very battle friendly. The storyline and magic system are also very well done.

Parappa The Rapper 

This game was seriously entertaining and mildly addictive. It's basically the same concept of Dance Dance Revolution or Guitar Hero: you have to press the right buttons in the right order and rhythm.

R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 

This is the best arcade-style racing game on Playstation. The game features brilliant track designs, cool cars, a great sensation of speed, and awesome control. Though it's pretty easy to win, it has major replay potential.
