Running is a fun, healthy activity that has great benefits. Whether you're a beginner or have been doing it for years, running either indoors or outdoors is always quality exercise. It burns tons of calories and builds muscle at the same time as well as also provide a great cardio workout.  Running has also been described as a great stress reliever and can help you feel more energetic and alert. As long as you're getting proper nutrition, running is also one of the healthiest ways to lose weight and get into shape. Overall, its clearly a great form of exercise, but you should make sure you understand all aspects of running before taking it up as hobby.

  • If you're going to be running outside, run with a partner or cellphone (especially women).
  • Always stay hydrated. Like with all other forms of exercise, running can quickly lead to dehydration.
  • Check with your doctor to make sure you are physically able to start a running routine.
  • Always be alert. Cars, bikers or even cracks in the sidewalk can lead to some serious injuries.
  • Avoid running at night. It's much more dangerous and cars can't see you as easily.
  • Make sure your shoes are tied. Shoe laces are easy to trip over and can easily get caught in a treadmill.
  • Stretch before and after you run. It can help prevent injury.
  • Listening to music while running can help motivate you, but is unsafe when running outside.
  • If you're running outside when its cold out, be sure to bundle up no matter how hot you think you may get. You can always take off a layer.
  • Don't look down. It's harder to breath deeply.
  • Keep arms and hands relaxed and move them front to back rather than side to side.
  • Don't make a fist. It tightens your arm muscles and wastes energy.
