How to Play:

If you're a beginner you may want to get yourself acquainted with the game first, then look at the equipment that will best suit your skills. It may seem like a simple sport but the rules and techniques involved with tennis can be complex. If you know what the court looks like, here are some basic rules and guidelines to follow in a singles game.

  • Players stand on opposite sides of the net diagnol from each other.
  • The server hits the ball from behind the base line (back of court) over the net so that it bounces once in the box opposite him. The person receiving the ball must hit it back over the net before it bounces twice or goes out of bounds.
  • The players then should continue to hit it back and forth (called a rally) until some one misses. The player who fails to hit the ball back over the net loses the point.
  • In tennis, you play a match which consists of sets (usually three) which consist of games in which you play for points.

Scoring

  • Within a game, the same player serves the entire time.
  • The first player to reach 4 points (and has at least 2 more points than the other player) wins the game.
    • The score must be stated by the server before she or he hits the ball.
    • The points are counted as : Love (love=zero), 15, 30, 40 and then game.
    • If both players have 3 points (40) then it is called a deuce
      • You play until someone wins by 2.
      • The first player to recieve a point after deuce has what is called the advantage.
      • If the person with the advantage loses the point, it returns to deuce.

Types of Strokes

There are many different stroke techniques and ways to perfect your shots. Their definitions differ depending on if you're right handed or left handed, but here are some basic guidelines.

  • Forehand- If you're right handed, this shot starts on your right side and ends on your left side.
  • Backhand- If you're right handed, this shot starts on your left and ends on your right side.
  • Serve- If you're right handed, a serve is done by tossing the ball up with your left hand and hitting it with your right hand above your head.
  • Volley- A volley is a shallow shot that is done close to the net.
  • Lob- If you lob the ball, it's should be done at the back of the court and the ball usually forms an arch. This shot is usually done to save the ball from going out of bounds and usually doesn't score.
